Lazarus unbound

This statue, by Sir Jacob Epstein stands in the antechapel of New College chapel in Oxford, and was installed c.1948. It shows Lazarus, newly awakened from death, and struggling to free himself from the binding cloths.

A powerful image of what must be each human being's stuggle for liberation from countless forms of unfreedom, inner and outer.

"I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly" (Jn 10: 10)
